Homemade Spicy Mac & Cheese 🧀

Create your own mac & cheese at home in just 15 minutes!

In this recipe, I used California Pepper Jack Cheese, California Sunshine low-fat milk, and whole wheat flour. It’s a better alternative to highly processed instant (boxed) mac & cheese.

Here’s what you’ll need and how to make it.

Ingredients:

1 cup cooked macaroni pasta (any kind)
¼ cup butter, unsalted
¼ cup brown wheat flour (or white)
2 cups California Sunshine low fat milk
1 cup California Pepper Jack Cheese, grated
1 teaspoon paprika (optional)
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground pepper

Procedure:

  1. Cook macaroni based on packaging instructions.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add flour, paprika, salt, and pepper and stir until smooth, about 5 minutes. Pour in your milk slowly, while stirring continuously.
  3. Continue to cook and stir until mixture is smooth and bubbling, about 4 mins minutes. Keep an eye on the milk! Make sure it doesn’t burn.
  4. Add the grated cheese and stir until melted, about 2 minutes.
  5. Fold the macaroni into the cheese sauce until coated.
  6. Enjoy!

I used whole wheat flour for a more interesting texture and to make it extra nutritious. And because I love cheese, I usually add 1/2 cup more without messing up the recipe.

Cheese can bring bold flavors and variety to any recipe, like the pepper jack I used in this dish.

Did you know that cheese isn’t just a tasty treat? It also has essential nutrients our body needs. These nutrients help build and maintain strong bones and teeth, aid in muscle growth and repair, assist in normal blood function and promote energy metabolism.
